"I played alto saxophone first. I was in the third grade, and my mother brought the saxophone home. My twin brother played the drums, my sister played the clarinet—so it was a musical family. My brother and I, we stuck with it. He plays in church and I play all over the world.
I joined the Lowrider Band, formerly WAR, in 1994. I was playing at Tipitina’s with Don Rousell Band; we were the opening act. And I asked Howard Scott, the guitarist and the leader of the band, if I could sit in with them, because at that point in time, they didn’t have a sax player. And he said, ‘We’ll see. We’ll see.’ And I said, ‘Because I know your motif.’ Bap bap bap dap de dap de da dah dah—the “Lowrider” song.
I went upstairs at Tipitina’s, leaning over the rail, watching their show. And Howard looks up, catches my eye and starts nodding at me, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah.’ I went and sat in with the band and I’ve been with them ever since..."
